The 7 Virtues of Bushido


Justice (Gi):
This virtue emphasizes moral conduct and acting with righteousness. It means making decisions based on what is right and fair, not just for oneself but for all people.

Courage (Yu):
Courage in Bushido is not merely physical bravery but also includes the intelligence to act with caution and discernment. It involves facing challenges and difficulties without fear, especially when fighting for a just cause.

Benevolence (Jin):
Benevolence is the compassion and empathy a samurai should show towards others. It emphasizes kindness, mercy, and a willingness to help those in need.

Respect (Rei):
Respect in Bushido extends beyond simple manners to encompass a deep regard for others, including one’s enemies. It involves treating others with courtesy and acknowledging their worth.

Honesty (Makoto):
Honesty and sincerity are crucial aspects of Bushido. A samurai should be truthful in their words and actions, building trust and integrity.

Honor (Meiyo):
Honor is paramount in Bushido. A samurai’s actions are guided by the desire to maintain their honor and reputation. This includes taking responsibility for one’s actions and upholding one’s principles.

Loyalty (Chuugi):
Loyalty to one’s lord and master is a fundamental aspect of Bushido. A samurai is expected to be devoted and faithful, dedicating their life to serving their lord’s interests.
